Disc Golf Tournaments
There have been annual 36 hole disc golf tournaments on the Queenstown Gardens course since 1996, when the inaugural Queenstown Classic took place. The Helicopter Line has been the ongoing major sponsor for this tournament. In addition there have frequently been tournaments held during Winter Festival.
In 1999 the inaugural Paradise Plates tournaments took place, on the same weekend as the Classic, at a temporarily constructed course on the Paradise Trust property, past Glenorchy. The Paradise Plates involves an 18 hole doubles tournament in the morning, followed by an 18 hole singles tournament in the afternoon. Dart River Jet Safaris has been the ongoing major sponsor for these tournaments.
Winners in each of the six divisions at both the Classic and the Plates gain trophies, along with helicopter flights and jet boat trips, respectively. Local businesses generously support the Queenstown Classic and excellent prizes are available in all divisions.
In 1998 Queenstown Disc Golf hosted the National Disc Golf Championships, at which the inaugural National Doubles event occurred. This tournament was dovetailed with the Queenstown Classic, resulting in 144 holes being played over four days, which at the time was the biggest ever disc golf event in New Zealand.
